The distinctive styles and talents of our artists are one of the most intriguing aspects of Rookwood Pottery. Many of the artists, throughout their careers, received international recognition for their accomplishments and contributions to fine art.
Decorated pieces were always signed with the cipher of the artist. It was even said that an unsigned piece, if found by management, was punished with a fine of a quarter to the artist responsible. Today, Rookwood still places these ciphers on our pieces, and sometimes, our management does fine our artists a quarter, but just
for fun.
The marks below have been traced and collected from original Rookwood pieces by Edwin J. Kircher in his Rookwood Pottery: An Explanation of Its Marks and Symbols and are presented here through the help of Riley Humler from Cincinnati Art Galleries. |
